Issue 006

Keeping you in the loop on the technology changing how work gets done.

01/On the road

Usman in Algiers

Last week, Usman joined our Algerian partner NexAtlas Technologies at ECSEL Expo in Algiers. Over four days, he met business owners, founders and technology teams from a range of industries, hearing about the systems they use and the things they'd like to improve.

A lot of the challenges will sound familiar: manual processes, disconnected systems and the search for better ways to get work done. As Usman put it, there's often a gap between where organisations are now and where they want to be technologically.

Algeria is uncharted territory for a lot of the tech world, which is exactly why it interests us. Together with NexAtlas, we're exploring where we could do some genuinely ambitious work there.

02/Events

See you at the summit

The Northern Tech Summit is at Sheffield's Crucible on 21 and 22 October, and Tanvir and Usman will be there representing Unovo. The programme includes Deb Hetherington, director of Leeds Digital Festival, Innovate UK's executive chair Tom Adeyoola and Joséphine Kant, head of ventures at Sovereign AI. We'll also be at Wednesday evening's startup showcase at Trafalgar Warehouse.

The summit is focused on how regional collaboration can support innovation, investment and growth. It's a chance to hear from people building the North's tech scene, as well as meet others doing the work.

The North's tech scene gets stronger every time the people in it actually talk to each other, and this time it's happening on our doorstep. If you spot Tanvir or Usman, come and say hello.

03/Work

Fewer juniors, more meetings

Anthropic has published data on how AI is changing its own workforce. Since early 2025, junior staff have fallen from 21% to 14% of its technical teams, and junior technical hires from 27% to 9%. Meeting time per employee is up 20% on last year.

A fifth of its staff say their job has shifted from doing the work to managing Claude, and the company says human attention and judgement are now the bottleneck. More work gets produced, which means more to read, check and agree on, so people are meeting more, not less.

AI was meant to clear our calendars. Instead, the work that's growing is judging what it produces - and with fewer juniors coming through, it's worth asking where tomorrow's judges are going to learn.

On our radar

Yallah! (Let's go!)

Tanvir has been working on ADHD YALLAH, a hub where young people with ADHD can get the help they need: practical advice and tools they'll actually use, without wading through dense medical language. It's the idea of Younes, a founder based in Belgium, and we're helping him bring it to life.

ADHD is close to the hearts of the Unovo team from our own experiences, so we're doing this one for free!
