Keeping you in the loop on the technology changing how work gets done.

01/Hardware

Apple finally folded

Apple unveiled its first foldable iPhone this week, arriving rather fashionably late to a party Samsung started back in 2019.

The hardware is interesting, but we're more interested in what it means for software. A phone that changes shape while you're using it introduces a whole new collection of ways for apps to behave badly.

We think that's about to become every app's problem. Apple has a habit of arriving late to a category and then making its version feel like the new normal. If the Duo sells, designing an app that works beautifully folded and unfolded could quickly become another basic expectation.

02/AI at work

Everyone has AI. Now what?

According to recent reports, around half of UK small businesses now use AI, more than double last year's figure. Across larger organisations, adoption is approaching ubiquity. Yet only 3% say they've fully embedded it across the business.

The smaller the business, the quicker it can change how it works.

That's the interesting gap. Individuals are already reporting significant productivity gains, but saving someone an hour doesn't automatically make the organisation an hour faster. Most businesses have introduced new tools without redesigning the work around them.

We think that's where being small helps. A large organisation needs a programme to change how its people work; a small business can decide on Monday and be doing it by Friday. It's how we went from chatting to AI, to handing it our most time-consuming jobs, to leaving it running unattended.

03/Policy

The Greens have an AI plan

The Green Party set out a five-point plan for AI this week, including protections for workers affected by it and proposals for international oversight.

Whilst it's unlikely to get anywhere, ideas like these tend to catch on at some time or another, and the bits around employment caught our attention. AI has entered most businesses one tool at a time, rather than through some grand company strategy, so plenty are already using it without ever really deciding where the boundaries are.

We think we're approaching the point where “What are we actually comfortable letting AI do?” becomes a question every business needs an answer to.

Usman
On our radar

Usman has been playing with Astra

OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra last week, and Usman's already been putting it through its paces. His early verdict: this feels like one of the bigger jumps.

It's not that it can suddenly do things AI couldn't do before. It's that he's having to intervene less, particularly on development work where there's a lot of context to hold onto and several steps between the instruction and the finished job.

He's so impressed that he hasn't stopped talking about it, and now we're all having a go. More to follow!
